ABOUT INFACOL (SIMETICONE)
WHAT IS INFACOL (SIMETICONE) AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Simeticone is activated dimeticone – dimeticone with silica gel.
It breaks up small gas bubbles in the gut, turning them into larger bubbles to be easier released from the gut, thereby providing relief from wind and discomfort.
HOW LONG DOES INFACOL TAKE TO WORK?
Relief from wind and colic can be observed within 30 minutes of taking.
WHO IS INFACOL SUITABLE FOR?
Infants from birth can take infacol.
Who should not take Infacol:
- If there are allergies to any of the ingredients (please see below)
- If the baby has a thyroid disorder – speak to doctor for advice.
Infacol with other medicines
- Levothyroxine – Infacol may reduce amount of levothyroxine in body, making treatment less effective. Speak to doctor first for advice.

HOW TO GIVE INFACOL TO YOUR BABY:
- One dropper-full (0.5mL) before each feed
1- Shake the bottle
2-Draw up the liquid by squeezing bulb twice
3- Squeeze into back of baby’s mouth
- Can continue treatment for several weeks (or until 4 months old)
- If no improvement after a few days of treatment, can increase the dose to two droppers (1mL) if needed
- If no improvement or persisting or getting worse despite treatment, especially with the higher dose, please speak to GP.
IMPORTANT – once opened, Infacol should be used within 28 days. Any product remaining after 28 days of opening should be safely discarded.
INFACOL SIDE-EFFECTS
Simeticone is a relatively safe medication and there are no documented side-effects.
However if one experiences any symptoms of allergy such as rash, redness, swelling and especially breathing difficulties, stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention.
OTHER MEASURES TO HELP SOOTHE BABY:
- Hold, cuddle and gently rock baby
- Push them in their pram gently
- Warm bath
- White noise (eg: fan, radio, TV) can help
- Can feed baby as usual – best to keep baby upright after feeding for a while to avoid gas building up.
- Avoid putting pressure on spine or skull as this could harm the baby.
