What is Priligy/dapoxetine?

Dapoxetine is a fast acting drug under the class of ‘selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors’ (SSRI’s). These drugs increase the level of the mood-regulating hormone serotonin in the brain.

How does dapoxetine work?

Increased serotonin release results in slowing down of the signals that encourage ejaculation, therefore increasing the time taken for ejaculation.

Effectiveness:

Increases ejaculation time by at least 1 minute for 69% of men

2 minutes + for 44% of men

Who can and cannot take dapoxetine:

For Males, 18-64

Not suitable for:

  • Heart problems
  • History of fainting
  • Mania
  • Moderate-severe liver problems

Speak to a healthcare professional first if:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • No PE diagnosis
  • History of postural hypotension
  • Recreational drug use
  • Mental health issues
  • Alcohol
  • Epilepsy
  • Blood issues such as bleeding or clotting
  • Eye pressure (glaucoma)
  • Kidney issues

How to take Dapoxetine

Take ONE tablet 1-3 hours before sex.

No more than 1 tablet in 24 hours.

Tablet lasts up to 12 hours after taken.

Follow up with GP when:

4 weeks after starting treatment

Or after 6 doses

GP will assess effectiveness.

If lower dose (30mg) ineffective, GP may increase to 60mg. Do not do this yourself without consulting a GP first.

Warnings and precautions

  • Avoid grapefruit juice within 24 hours of taking Dapoxetine, as it can increase Dapoxetine levels in the body which can increase likelihood of side-effects
  • Avoid alcohol

Dapoxetine with other medications:

AVOID:

  • Tramadol – strong painkiller
  • Migraine medication
  • St John’s wort – a herbal medicine
  • Lithium – for Bipolar
  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors – a class of antidepressants (MAOI)
  • Thioridazine – for schizophrenia
  • Tryptophan – to help sleep

Can take Priligy 14 days after stopping these medications

If taking Priligy and need to take one of the above medications, wait 7 days.

TELL DOCTOR BEFORE:

  • Mental health medication (apart from depression which should be completely avoided)
  • Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications, non-steroidal (NSAIDs)
  • Blood thinners
  • Erectile dysfunction medications
  • Heart medication
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Antifungals
  • HIV medications (some)
  • Antibiotics (some)
  • Sickness medication aprepitant

Side-effects

Very common (more than 1 in 10)

Dizziness

Headache

Feeling sick (nausea)

Common (up to 1 in 10)

  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Blocked nose
  • Diarrhea, constipation or wind
  • Blocked nose
  • Higher blood pressure
  • Sweating more
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling numb ‘pins and needles’
  • Agitation and restlessness

Uncommon (up to 1 in 100) include:

  • Dizziness upon standing or fainting “spinning”
  • Increased heart rate
  • Feeling drunk
  • Mood changes – anxiety or depression
  • Vision problems
  • Cold sweats
  • Itchiness

Rare (up to 1 in 1000)

  • Dizziness upon exertion
  • Suddenly fall asleep
  • Bowel urgency increased

Rare but serious – speak to GP and stop taking Dapoxetine if it happens:

  • Feeling dizzy or faint upon getting up
  • Suicidal or self harming thoughts
  • Mood changes
  • Seizures/fits

Dapoxetine alternatives

EMLA cream (numbing agent)

Can i take dapoxetine with viagra or other ED medication?

  • Not recommended
  • As both medications can lower blood pressure
  • Taking together can result in blood pressure being dangerously low.

Can I drink alcohol with Dapoxetine?

  • Not recommended as can increase side effects such as dizziness and disorientation.
