Worm Infections in humans (overview)

Types of worms

Worms are a type of parasite.

There are many different types of infectious worms including:

  • Threadworm (pinworm)
  • Tapeworm
  • Hookworm
  • Roundworm
  • Whipworm
  • Fluke

The most common treatment for worms in general but especially threadworm is Mebendazole (known as Ovex or Vermox). This can treat a wide range of but not all worm infections.

Depending on the type of worm infection, a different medication may be suitable*.

The main service offered in pharmacies is Mebendazole for Threadworm in particular. Other worms should generally be seen by a GP to get the ideal treatment recommended.

Signs of threadworm include:

  • Small pieces of what looks like white thread (the worms) in your poo.
  • Extremely itchy around the anus or vagina, especially at night.

See a GP if:

  • Worm-shaped rash seen on skin (likely Hookworm)
  • Sudden unexplained weight loss
  • Large worm or worm eggs in poo (roundworm, hookworm or tapeworm likely).
  • Digestive system disturbances such as sickness, loose stool for more than 2 weeks.
