
Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection that is contagious.
How molluscum contagiosum is spread:
- Skin-to-skin contact mainly
- In adults – is not an STI directly but is often spread through sexual intercourse
Though chances of spreading through normal activities is quite low. Generally no time off school is advised for a child with molluscum contagiosum.
Symptoms
- Spots – primary symptom, other symptoms are rare
- Relatively wide, dome shaped (as above)
- The spots are usually harmless
Who does it affect the most?
- Mainly children
- But adults can
How long does it last?
Infection should clear within 18 months
Treatment
- Medicinal treatment is not normally advised
- Can treat symptoms such as dry and itchy skin (eg: use damp towel, creams)
There are treatments available that can shorten the duration:
- Cryotherapy – liquid nitrogen freezing
- Can be physically removed by a specialist
- Molludab – potassium hydroxide 5% solution

- Potassium hydroxide 5% solution
- Works by causing inflammation around the spots, prompting the immune system to attack and get rid of the virus causing the spots.
Lifestyle advice
- Cover affected area
- Use condom if infected
- Do not scratch or itch spots – risk of secondary infection and/or scarring
- Do not share items
See a doctor if:
- Not sure if spots are that of molluscum contagiosum
- The spots are causing significant distress; very itchy, near the eyes, painful or swollen or crusty
