TEETHING

When a baby’s teeth start to grow and sprout.

Sometimes, the teeth may emerge with no pain or discomfort.

However, in many cases it can cause symptoms such as:

  • Mild temperature <38°C
  • Flushed cheek
  • Rash on face – wiping when dribbling can help prevent
  • More dribbling than usual
  • Behavioural changes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Sore and red gum where teeth emerging
  • Chewing on objects – one of the first signs of teething

At what age is teething expected?

  • Usually around 6 months
  • But can be as early as 4 months
  • Or after 12 months

Treatment for teething/helping teething

Teething ring

  • Safe ring for baby to chew on

6 months and above: Chew on raw fruit and vegetables

  • eg: carrot
  • Watermelon

Alternatively can give bread

Watch baby closely when eating – in case of choking

Teething gels

3 months and above: Paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain

Sugar-free recommended.
