When a baby’s teeth start to grow and sprout.
Sometimes, the teeth may emerge with no pain or discomfort.
However, in many cases it can cause symptoms such as:
- Mild temperature <38°C
- Flushed cheek
- Rash on face – wiping when dribbling can help prevent
- More dribbling than usual
- Behavioural changes
- Difficulty sleeping
- Sore and red gum where teeth emerging
- Chewing on objects – one of the first signs of teething
At what age is teething expected?
- Usually around 6 months
- But can be as early as 4 months
- Or after 12 months
Treatment for teething/helping teething
Teething ring
- Safe ring for baby to chew on
6 months and above: Chew on raw fruit and vegetables
- eg: carrot
- Watermelon
Alternatively can give bread
Watch baby closely when eating – in case of choking
Teething gels
- Homeopathy (eg: Nelson’s Teething Gel)
- Or mild local anasthetic (eg: Calgel)
3 months and above: Paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain
